Project Details

This complex project was comprised of a 166,000+ SF expansion with a 40,000+ SF renovation. The new facility addition included 156 pre-cast modular cell units with each unit consisting of two cells and a MEP chase. Significant phasing was achieved allowing access to the existing facility after completion of portions of the addition, all while maintaining operations within the correctional center and working within the larger context of the Virginia Beach Municipal Center. The extensive renovations included the complete replacement of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing within the building, including replacement of existing HVAC rooftop units and all associated ductwork.  Existing floor slabs were trenched, and core drilled for new plumbing and electrical. All interior rain leaders were replaced, and numerous interior concrete and masonry walls were removed. New fire alarm and security systems were installed, and the existing elevator cabs were replaced and upgraded. The project included abatement of hazardous material including both lead and asbestos. The renovated portion of the project was completely interfaced with the expansion and includes systems controlled by electronic touch screens located throughout the facility.
